Sixto Cancel

Sixto’s experiences in foster care fuel his passion for shifting system policy and practice through technology and data. As CEO of Think of Us, Sixto co-led the design and execution of the first ever White House Foster Care and Technology Hackathon which resulted in new federal regulations, new funding for technology in foster care, six additional hackathons, local technology initiatives, and helped shift the national conversation about foster care and technology. Sixto has participated in over 25 convenings as a panelist, keynote or presenter. Sixto has served as a Young Fellow at Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative since 2010, where he has worked on youth engagement, asset development and permanency.

This presentation will provide participants with a concrete understanding of how to center lived experience in their practice and system reform. Participants will learn about practices and projects that have leveraged lived experience data into practice and policy.

1A How Has the Pandemic Changed Me as a Supervisor? - This presentation will provide a brief introduction on themes and data of the Pandemic's stressors and influences on human service supervisors. There will then be a panel of 4 supervisors from the following settings: protective services, school-based setting, mental health clinic, and residential treatment.

2A Writing for Self-Care and Wellness - In "Writing for Self Care and Wellness," participants will be introduced to the clinically-supported reasons (300 published studies) to use expressive writing for emotional and physical wellness. It will de-mystify “writing,” and give tips and guidelines on how and why to use writing as part of a clinician's self-care--and, if appropriate, as part of a clinical practice.

3A * Community and Family Engagement Practice - This presentation will address the importance of Community Child Welfare practices and how prevention work is key to supporting families before they are brought to the attention of governmental agencies.

4A * Brave Spaces, Your School Community and You: DEI Training Tips - Alison, Kristen, Tess and Jesus have worked with DEI leaders to engage their educational collaborative in brave conversations over the past three years developing trainings, facilitating staff, student, & family groups, while also providing resources. They worked in collaboration with school administration in order to roll out opportunities from the bottom up and not just top down.

5A * Supporting Mental Health Needs of Immigrant Youth - Saheli is a culturally specific organization providing Domestic Violence (DV) prevention and intervention services to a culturally diverse population. Having served South Asian survivors for 25 years, Saheli is well aware of the negative cultural biases that influence attitudes and behaviors related to relationships and mental health.

6A * Recovering from Educational COVID : Using Student Rights to Advance Recovery - This presentation will provide information on using special education and other education resources to help students return to academic success in a post-COVID world. We will discuss social-emotional learning protections, preventing disciplinary exclusions from school, obtaining compensatory services for missed educational opportunities and obtaining quality special education services and placements.

7A Turning Experiences and Challenges into Triumph: GIFT-Gathering and Inspiring Future Talent Training - This workshop will teach participants the strategies for identifying and incorporating their unique strengths through the three (3) main components or “C’s” of the GIFT Training: Communication, Core Gift, and Career Development. This interactive process will inform the participants about the training, the benefits of the strength-based process, and foster self-discovery, confidence and competence for young adult empowerment throughout the workshop.

8A Gang Intervention: A Collaboration Between the Lynn Police Department and L.Y.S.O.A (Lynn Youth Street Outreach Advocacy) - This workshop will describe the dynamic relationship and collaboration of L.Y.S.O.A. and the Lynn Police Department in working with youth involved in gangs. The presenters will discuss the different roles they play with L.Y.S.O.A. prioritizing intervention services and the Lynn Police handling accountability of criminal activity. The presentation will also include how other service providers can participate in the effort to help these youth.

9A Five Types of Safety Plans - This presentation will categorize five different types of safety plans including: no-harm contracts, harm reduction plans, advance directives, support and coping plans, and resolution-focused interventions. This presentation will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in each approach. This presentation seeks to impress upon attendants the importance of understanding the nature of the crisis from the client's perspective and to make a plan that fits the situation.

10A Motivational Interviewing & Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Strategies for Youth at Risk - This presentation will explore how Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills can be useful and effective for youth at risk. We will explore the different strategies and discuss their application in various settings.

11A Case Study: Amesbury School Support & Empowerment Team (ASSET) - An Innovative Partnership to Provide Critical Support Services to Vulnerable, At-Risk Students and Families in the Amesbury Public Schools - Anxiety, depression, and other mental health symptoms are rising among students. Families are experiencing a multitude of psychosocial stressors affecting their safety and well-being.

While specific to mentoring, content may be applied across fields. This will include assessing equity in services, clinical approaches, and new ways to view the role of mentoring services.

15A Resiliency in Motion- Incorporating OT into Treatment for Greater Functional Independent Outcomes - This workshop will educate participants in Occupational Therapy, and how OT strategies enhance mental health services in treatment of youth at risk. Using an interactive approach, we will discuss OT treatment and its incorporation into the overall treatment plan.
